What you need to know

  • The Pool

Whether for hydrotherapy or simply to maintain an active lifestyle we have the pool for you. It is an 8’x20’ heated pool (25°C) with a custom ramp so dogs can walk in, walk out or jump off.

Pool maintenance is done in accordance with the recommendations of Dr. Scott Weese, DVM DVSc DipACVIM, a veterinary internist and microbiologist. Evidence suggests that the risk of hydrotherapy-associated infection is limited. Nevertheless, water chemistry levels are checked regularly, and levels maintained in the desired range (2-5 parts per million (ppm) free chlorine, pH: 7.2-7.8, alkalinity 80-120 ppm)..

We work with FunTime Pool to ensure the quality of our water.

  • First Time Swim

Although we allow 2 dogs at a time, we recommend introducing the dogs individually. Even great swimmers can be intimidated by the new environment and space. First time swims bookings are $35 (incl HST) for a 20 min swims.

Not all dogs are great swimmers. If your dog has never swam, we recommend using a swim vest. Our goal is to show the dogs that its life is not in danger. Picking the dog up and assisting the dog to swim back towards the owners or their favorite toys is an effective way to slowly show the dog that swimming is not life threatening.

As the session goes on, we make sure we give as much positive reinforcement to the dog and continuously assess for signs of anxiety or distress.

What to expect? The session may be cut a little short if the dog had enough. It’s a lot of new things in a short period of time. The dog may only go in the water 4 times. That’s normal and good progress for new swimmers. We are currently working on a Learn to Swim Program as it usually takes a few sessions for the dog to be comfortably regardless of the breed.

  • Open Swim

Before booking an Open Swim session, all dogs must first book a First Time swim. and fill out the consent form.

What should book, 20 or 30 min sessions? Remember that 1 min of swim equals 4 min of running. For our new swimmers, older dogs or dogs recovering from injuries, 20 min is more than enough. For agile swimmers, owners may want a longer session.

When bringing 2 dogs, you may want longer sessions . We offer 30 min session. Talk to our staff to see if 30 min sessions are a good fit for you.

    20 min session - $30 (HST incl)
30 min session- $46 (HST incl)

  • Learn to Swim - Pawsio Swim Levels

Remember the 80’s and 90’s color swim badges? Well, it inspired us to create our own swim chart. We even give out white badges!

    Click her to view

Learning to swim takes time as we follow the chart and take a gradual approach.

    This is an average progression
    for new swimmers.

1st Session - The goal is to ensure the dog is comfortable in the environment and the ramp into the water. If the dog makes in next high or reaches the end of the ramp, it is a very successful 1st session. We provide the swim vest.

2nd Session - We’ll take your dog in the water and shwing them out to get out. We’ll gradually go further from the ramp.

3rd Session - We will work on showing the how to jump og the ramp. When he dog is comfortable jumping on its own, we will discuss removing the vest.

  • Hydrotherapy

This type of session is with Cynthia Babineau (BSc Kin, BSc Physio, Dip. Can. Rehab) or with Clara Selle (qualified hydrotherapist) in the pool with the dog. In these sessions, the therapy is conducted in the water. They can help is establishing personalized and focused program specific to your dog’s needs.

We recommend booking a First Time Swim prior to a hydrotherapy session. It will allow for the dog to be a bit more comfortable in the water which will in turn, allow for a more effective hydrotherapy session.

    Referral required.

    Contact us for more details.

  • Potty Area

We recommend feeding your dog several hours before swimming or several hours after swimming. It is very important that you walk your dog and take him/her out for a potty area BEFORE entering our pool. Poop bags and garbage are just outside the pool area. Accidents will results in pool closure.

Fecal contamination of pools will result in pool closure anywhere from 25 min to 13 hours depending on the severity of the contamination. Specific protocols are in place to ensure the health and well-being of all dogs. If the pool must be emptied, closure may last a few days.

  • Vet Referral

If a pet owner is simply looking for their pet to have access to a pool for exercise, then a referral would not be needed. However, we would suggest that if the animal has a serious pre-existing health condition such as but not limited to: heart disease, respiratory disease, epilepsy, a neurological disorder, any brachycephalic breed (short snot/squished faced dogs), recent surgical procedure, etc. then a referral from their vet would be prudent as these patients would carry more risk.

  • Safety

As for January 2024, all our staff will be Dog Safe certified (Canine first aid). For insurance purposes, only our staff can go in the pool. But you too can your role by encouraging your dog and providing treats and positive reinforcement.
